Blitum capitate

Blitum glabate [3] , or Mary capitate , or Zhminda capitate [4] ( lat. Blítum capitátum , Chenopódium capitatum ) is an edible annual herbaceous plant, a species of the genus Zhminda ( Blitum ), isolated from the genus Marie of the Amaranth family. Also known as "strawberry spinach" [5] .

Distribution

The species comes from North America, and is distributed throughout the United States and Canada , right up to Alaska . It also grows in Europe and New Zealand .

Description

The flowers are small, fleshy, bright red. Overgrown perianth (mistaken for fruits) are edible, taste like strawberries . Juice was used in ancient times as a dye. Fruits contain small black lenticular seeds 0.7–1.2 mm long [6] .

Leaves can be eaten raw. However, moderation should be observed since they contain oxalates . Seeds in large quantities can be toxic [7] .

The capitate is capillary undemanding to soils, preferring sunny places. Frost resistant. Propagated by self-seeding. It is drought-resistant, but with a lack of moisture, its fruits become dry.
