Biography and veneration
Little reliable information has been preserved about the life of St. Eustorgius; according to legend, he came from a noble Greek family.
He became bishop of Mediolanus in 343 or 344, he occupied the department until his death in 349 or 350. His predecessor and successor in the Milan department , respectively, Protasius and Dionysius , were also canonized.
Eustorgius was the initiator of the convocation of two diocesan synods, was actively involved in the construction of new churches in Milan. He is mentioned by Athanasius of Alexandria as an energetic opponent of Arianism . Ambrose the Mediolan calls Eustorgius a "confessor." It was considered a saint already in the 5th-6th centuries, its cult confirms the mention of his name in the canon of the Mass of the Ambrosian rite and the presence in Milan of several churches consecrated in his honor, the most famous of which is the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio . Eustorgius was buried in a cemetery next to the church, on the site of which now stands the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio. After the construction of the modern basilica in the 12th century, the relics of the saint were transferred under the main altar of the church.
The life of Bishop Eustorgius was created in the XII century and has come to us in more than 20 copies [1]
Power Transfer Legend
According to church tradition, immediately after his election to the post of bishop, Eustorgius took a trip to Constantinople in order to confirm the emperor ’s election. Emperor Constant reaffirmed the powers of Eustorgius and granted him a relic - the relics of three kings , according to legend belonging to the kings who brought gifts to the Infant Jesus. Eustorgius transferred these relics stored in a marble sarcophagus to Milan on two cows that could support the weight of the sarcophagus [2] . The relics remained in Milan until the 12th century, when after the capture of the city by Frederick Barbarossa, the emperor ordered them to be transferred to Cologne , where they remain to this day in the famous triple reliquary .
