Biography
George Shoop was born on June 15, 1836 in Kittunning , Pennsylvania . In 1852, his family moved to the city of Galesburg in Illinois . There, Shup and his father were engaged in farming and cattle breeding . As a result of the financial panic of 1857, he went broke and two years later he moved to the territory of Colorado , where he took up mining. Shoop took part in the civil war as part of the third cavalry of Colorado. After the war, Shoop spent some time in Montana , then moved to Idaho , where he became one of the founders of Salmon . From 1874 to 1878, Shoop served as a delegate to the Republican Idaho Legislature.
In 1884, Shoop, as a federal commissioner from Idaho, visited the Louisiana World Cotton Fair. He spent several thousand dollars of his own money on an exposition from Idaho.
In April 1889, Shoop became governor of Idaho . July 3, 1890 Idaho received the status of the state , the 43rd in a row. On October 1 of the same year, Shoop was elected the first governor of the new state. However, in December, Schoop convened a meeting in the state legislature , at which he was elected US Senator from Idaho. A few days later he resigned as governor. His successor was Lieutenant Governor Norman Willie . While in office as a senator, Schoop chaired the Territorial Committee and was a member of the military, Native American, and other committees. In 1894, he was re-elected for a new six-year term, but was defeated by Fred Dubois in the 1900 election, after which he departed from politics.
Since June 15, 1868, George Shoop was married to Leon Darnutser, from whom he had three daughters and three sons. He died on December 21, 1904 in the Idaho capital of Boise. [2]
