Gilbert "Gil" Cates Gilbert “Gil” Cates , (June 6, 1934 - October 31, 2011) - American film director and television producer [1] . Best known for annually producing an Academy Award ceremony . From 1983 to 1987, he was president of the Directors Guild of America .

Biography

Cates (born Gilbert Katz) was born in New York in 1934. The son of Jewish immigrants from Russia [2] , Nina (nee Peltzman) and Nathan Katz, who contained a small clothing factory [3] .

In the early 1960s, he was actively involved in the production of television series, and since the 1970s, feature films, the most famous of which were: “ I never sang to my father ” (1970, Golden Globe Award for the best dramatic film ), “ Summer wishes, winter dreams ” (1973), “ Oh God! Book II ”(1980),“ The Last Married Couple in America ”(1980).

In 1983-1987, he was president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA ).

In 1990-1997 - Dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television ( Eng. UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television ), University of California [4] .

Since 1990, fourteen times became the producer of the Academy Award ceremony, for which he was nominated for the Emmy Award many times (received only in 1991).

Cates died at a UCLA University of California campus in Los Angeles on October 31, 2011, at the age of 77. [5]

For his contribution to the development of the film industry, he was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
