Biography
He worked for the satirical magazine “ Le Charivari ” for 30 years. He wrote funny and popular plays (comedies, vaudeville), often co-authored with other playwrights. For his articles and feuilleton he created numerous engravings. It was Leroy who first called the “Impressionists” a group of then-unknown artists in his critical article “Exhibition of the Impressionists”. This article, published on April 25, 1874, was dedicated to the first exhibition of the Impressionists and was a dialogue invented by Leroy between two visitors to the exhibition, exchanging views on the paintings seen there. The reason for using the word “impressionists” was Claude Monet 's painting “ Impression. Sunrise. " The article ends with the fact that after examining the paintings presented at the exhibition, Vincent, an academic artist, goes insane and, issuing wild cries, starts a frantic dance.
Initially, artists rejected the nickname “impressionists” (literally - impressionists ), but later adopted it. According to art historian Jean-Paul Crespel [1] :
| Leroy, of course, could not even suggest that the artists in protest (not wanting to listen to Degas ) would call themselves impressionists and that impressionism would become the most famous art movement. Only thanks to the heavyweight humor of Leroy his name was forever connected with the names of the artists whom he wanted to make a laughing stock, and remained in the history of art. |
