Kwekwe is a city in Zimbabwe . It is the administrative center of the Midlands province and the district of the same name . The population is 108,178 people (as estimated in 2017) [1] .

History
The history of the city is associated with the arrival of Europeans in these places at the end of the 19th century. In 1894, traces of gold mining, which took place even in antiquity , were discovered here [2] . The settlement itself was founded in 1902 and got its name from the name of the Kvekve river flowing here (in the language of the local population, “kvekve” means either frog croaking or a crowd). In 1902, Kvekve received the status of a village, in 1928 - a small town (town), and in 1934 - a city municipality. Since 1980 - as part of the independent state of Zimbabwe [2] .
Population
According to the census in 2002 , the population of Kvekwe was 93,608 [3] . According to 2010 estimates, this indicator increased to 99,149 people [4] . In 2017, the number of inhabitants reached 108 178 people.
Economics
Currently, Kvekwe is an industrialized city located in a prime location in the very center of the country, in the middle of roads and railways connecting the two largest cities of Zimbabwe - Harare and Bulawayo . The industrial enterprises of the city produce steel and chrome , as well as rails for the railway track. Residents around the city are engaged in agriculture, including tobacco growing and cattle breeding [2] . Also here is one of the largest centers for the production of fertilizers in the country [5] .
A key link in the local healthcare system is the Kvekwe Central Hospital .
