History
The mission was established in 1994 by the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and introduced into the structure of the Sydney and Australian-New Zealand dioceses . Korean priest Justin Kan (강태용 유스 티노스) was appointed administrator of the mission [1] .
From 1994 to 1997, members of the mission opened a house church in honor of St. St. John the Evangelist in Seoul (TongEui-dong, Chongno-ku, Seoul), and the priest Justin Kang published books: “The Divine Liturgy”, “Eastern Orthodox Church, its history and theology”, as well as a brochure of the catechetical plan - “Orthodox Church”. Every two months, a journal began to appear under the name "Eastern Orthodoxy." The book of the priest Justin Kang, “The Eastern Orthodox Church, its history and theology”, published with the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion (Corporal) and the support of Cardinal Stefan Kim Soo-hwan, was chosen by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Korea as “Book of the Year 1996”, and purchased by the government 400 copies, for distribution in the national libraries of the country.
In 1997, 1999 and 2009, Metropolitan Hilarion (Corporal) visited Korea, consecrating the church in honor of St. Anne, having baptized several people from the Koreans and ordained to the holy dignity of Paul Kang.
In 2009, Holy Trinity Monastery was formed at the Church of St. Anna, and the priest Justin Kahn was tonsured a monk by Metropolitan Hilarion (Corporal) with the name John (in honor of St. Righteous John of Kronstadt ), and the wife of Justin's father, Elena took tonsure with the name of Elizabeth (in honor of the Holy Hieromartyr Elizabeth).
In September 2017, the mission's activity was criticized by the Metropolitan Ambrose (Zographos), Governor of the Korean Metropolitanate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, [2] .
