The eldest son of Shutturna II and brother of Tushratta [1] . He was killed during the palace coup [2] by the nobleman Tukha (or Parhi) by the leader of an anti-Egyptian dignitary group, dissatisfied with the policies of the kings of Mitanni aimed at rapprochement with Egypt . Apparently, the rebellion and assassination of Artashshumara were the result of negotiations between the Hittite king Suppilium I and Artadama II , the candidate for the throne of Mitanni.
These events are known from a letter from the younger brother and heir of Artashshumara on the throne of Tushrat to the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III , preserved in the Amarna archive [3] :
“When I came to the throne of my father, I was still small, and he did evil things to my country and killed his master. And therefore, he did not allow me to maintain friendship with those whom I value. I, in view of his atrocities committed in my country, did not hesitate and executed the murderers of Artashshumar, my brother. ”
