In connection with the epidemic of SARS that struck the East Asian countries in 2003, the World Grand Prix competition was decided to be moved to Europe. Unlike previous tournaments, the 2003 Grand Prix was held in only one country - Italy. 12 participating teams at the preliminary stage were divided into two groups. Three of the best teams reached the final stage, where they played the final places according to the round robin system.

In its preliminary stage group, the Russian team took second place. In the final round, Russian volleyball players went without a defeat until the final round, where they met with the Chinese team. This match was the actual ending of the draw and brought success to the Chinese women.
