History
The city was founded on August 17, 1773, its first mayor was Juan Mata Vazquez. The name of the city is taken from the language of the Taino Indians and means “place of water” in translation. In 1880, large fires took place in the Kayei region, in which many people died. By the end of the XIX - the first half of the XX century, there was a backward agricultural region inhabited by small farmers. In the 1920s and 1930s, the lands around Kayeu were bought by farmers by large, mainly American companies, and various export crops were grown on them (sugar and, first of all, tobacco). In the 1950s and 1960s, the Kayeu region fell into the Puerto Rico industrial development program.
Near the city is the third highest building in Puerto Rico - the Cayey Pegasus Broadcasting Tower with a mast antenna height of 332.5 meters (built in 1966).
