He waged war with the king of the Hittite kingdom, Hattusili II , who conquered the kingdom of Aleppo , Ashtatu , Nuhash and the vassals of Mitanni, and possibly subjugated the country of Ishuv to his influence (the documents do not mention the conquest of Ishuva Hattusili II, but it refers to the rebellion of Ishuva against the Hittites King of the Hittites of Thudhalia III ). In addition, Hattusili II established friendly relations with the king of Kizzuvatna Pattadishu and even temporarily dragged this country to his side, which also weakened Mitanni's position in this region.
At the same time, Mitanni waged war with Egypt over Northern Syria. The war was of varying success and, in the end, Artatama agreed on peace and the division of spheres of influence with the Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose IV , according to which Northern Syria remained in the Mitanni zone with access to the Mediterranean Sea . The contract was sealed by the marriage of Thutmose IV with the daughter of Artatama.
Artatama I was the father of Shututna II and the grandfather of Tushratta , as can be seen from the letter of Tushratta to the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III .
“... I now asked my brother for gold and had two reasons for this: for the grandson (maybe the tomb) of my grandfather Artatama and as a gift for the bride.”
