About the album
One Pig is dedicated to the birth, life of one pig , including its slaughter and eating, and is entirely based on the sounds that accompanied these events. Work on the album began in August 2009, at the same time as the birth of the pig, which was slaughtered and frozen 25 weeks later. Herbert chose the date of eating a pig by chance: on August 16, 1945, George Orwell's novel Animal Farm was published. In May 2011, when work on the record was coming to an end, the composer returned to the pigsty , where he walked and hummed, “as if in memory of my pig”; these sounds formed the basis of the last track [2] .
The record caused a scandal in the musician’s homeland, where it was considered that the screech of a slaughtered pig was used to create it [3] . PETA tried to prevent the release of the album, according to which Herbert decided to turn animal cruelty into a spectacle [4] . Responding to these accusations, the composer said that he was not allowed to the slaughter, and its sounds were not used on the recording, the purpose of which, according to Herbert, was to persuade listeners to vegetarianism [3] .
