Raceburg, Julius Theodore Christian

Julius Theodor Christian Ratzeburg ( German: Julius Theodor Christian Ratzeburg ; February 16, 1801 , Berlin - October 24, 1871 , Berlin ) - the famous German entomologist , founder of the doctrine of harmful forest insects.

He received his primary education in Königsberg , the Poznan Lyceum and the Berlin Gymnasium. In 1821 he entered the University of Berlin at the Faculty of Medicine, during the course of which he published the dissertation “Observationes ad peloriarum indolem definiendam spectantes”. In 1826 he received the title of doctor and as a privat-docent of the University of Berlin he read zoology. Since the opening of the Forestry Academy in Neustadt-Eberswalde ( 1830 ), he has been a professor in it, teaching throughout the field of natural sciences.

Since that time, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the study of insect biology. His first entomological works were: “Ueb. Entwicklung d. fusslosen Hymen-Larven "(" Act. Ac. Leop.-Carol. ", XVI, 1832 ) and Entomolog. Beiträge "(l. Pp. XVII, 1834 ). Then follows a classic work that laid a solid foundation for the doctrine of harmful insects in the forest: Die Fonstinsekteu (3 vols. Berlin, 1837 - 1844 ). In 1844 , 1848 and 1852 . 3 volumes of Die Ichneumonen d. Forstinsekten (B.) were published. Die Waldverderber u. ihre Feinde ( 1841 ) lasted six editions until 1861 ; the seventh edition of Yudeich in 1876 , the eighth edition of Judeich u. Nitsche in 1885 - 1895 ( Vienna ). The book provides the best guide to harmful forest insects (under the title "Lehrbuch d. Mitteleurop. Forstinsektenkunde"). Do not mix with the last essay another work of R., "Die Waldverderbniss" (2 vol., B. 1866 - 1868 ), which sets out p an object from the point of view of tree diseases. Together with F. F. Brandt, R. published Medicinische Zoologie (2 vols. Br. 1827 - 1834 ) and both with Ph. Phoebus: Abbildung u. Beschr. in Deutschland wachsenden Giftgewächse "(2 vols., Berl. 1838 )." Forstwis. Schriftsteller Lexikon "appeared after the death of R. ( 1874 ), edited by P. Ascherson.
