Biography
At an early age he was influenced by Chuck Berry , Albert King and BB King . He started playing guitar in his school days in Connecticut, from 1970-73 he studied at the Berkeley College of Music (did not graduate) with Gary Burton (vibraphone class?) And Mick Goodrick (guitar class). In 1974, on the recommendation of Goodrick, Scofield joined the Jerry Mulligan and Chet Baker orchestra at a concert in Carnegie Hall . After that, Scofield became a two-year member of the group of Billy Cobham and George Duke . In 1977, he recorded with Charles Mingus , playing with the Burton Quartet and the Liebman's Qintet. In improvisations of that time, Scofield focused on funk.
In 1977, Scofield formed his own ensemble, which included pianist Richie Beirach (Beirach), bassist George Mraz (Mraz) and drummer Joe LaBarbera (LaBarbera). The ensemble successfully toured Europe and recorded the first album, "John Scofield Live". In 1980, Scofield created a trio with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum. In this composition, he recorded three albums that enjoyed commercial success. In 1982, Scofield joined Miles Davis . In 1982-85 Scofield traveled with the Davis ensemble throughout the Western world, participated in the recording of Davis albums.
Throughout his career, Scofield led ensembles and was part of other ensembles, while he showed possession of several jazz styles, including a peculiar mixture of bop with funk, blues and country. He played both on an electric guitar and on an acoustic guitar.
