History
On February 8, 1896, the State Treasury of the Free State of the Congo received the right to issue banknotes, and on August 27, 1906, the right to mint coins. On January 11, 1909, a private Belgian Congo Bank was created, which received the right to issue for 25 years. The issue of bank notes in Congolese francs began in October 1912. On October 10, 1927, the right to issue was extended until June 30, 1953, and the territory of Rwanda-Urundi was also included in the circulation zone of the Congolese franc.
On July 1, 1952, the right to issue the Congolese franc was transferred to the State Central Bank of the Belgian Congo and Rwanda-Urundi. The banknote issue began in 1952.
On October 3, 1960, the Monetary Council of the Republic of the Congo was created, to which all the functions of the then liquidated Central Bank of the Belgian Congo and Rwanda-Urundi were transferred. On February 24, 1961, a decision was made to establish the National Bank of the Congo, but in fact the bank began to operate only on June 22, 1964.
On October 27, 1971, a new state bank, the Bank of Zaire, began operations [1] . In 1997, the bank was renamed the Central Bank of the Congo.
