Biography
The father's ancestors Jorma Ludvik come from Finland , the mother is a descendant of Jewish immigrants from Russia. [four]
As a teenager, living in Washington, Kaukonen learned to play the guitar. There in Washington, he and future Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casadie (who at the time played the six-stringed guitar) formed a band called The Triumphs. Kaukonen left Washington and enrolled at Antioch College , where his friend Ian Buchanan taught him to play the guitar with a fingerstyle . Buchanan also introduced Kaukonen to the music of Rev. Gary Davis , whose songs became part of Kaukonen’s repertoire. [five]
In 1962, Kaukonen relocated to San Francisco and entered the University of Santa Clara . At this time, he also gave guitar lessons. Kaukonen, as he later said, considered himself an exceptionally blues guitarist, and he never had ambitions to play in a rock band. He played as a solo performer in bars and restaurants, and his acoustic guitar playing can also be heard in a joint 1964 historical performance with Janis Joplin , later released under the heading “ The Typewriter Tapes ” ( Typewriter Tapes ). for the obsessive background sound of a typewriter, which typed the first wife of Kaukonen - Margaret). [6] When Paul Kantner invited Jorma to attend a rehearsal for the Jefferson Airplane, he was amazed at the arsenal of effects available for an electric guitar and later said, “technology got me into rock music .”
In 1969-70, Kaukonen and Jack Kazedi formed the Hot Tuna project. At first, Hot Tuna performed vocalist Jefferson Airplane Marty Balin , and Joey Covington as drummer and bass player.
In 1974, Kaukonen recorded the first solo album, Quah .
