Story
Since childhood, the yakuza Toraji Yamazaki, whose parents have committed suicide because of debt, has lost the ability to laugh. One day, he finds himself in the Tokyo district of Asakusa at the presentation of rakugo narrator Hayashiyatei Dombei, which impresses him so much that Yamazaki on his knees asks Hayashiyatei to accept him as an apprentice.
Dombei owes the leader of the gang, to which Toraji belongs, 4 million yen. Toraji offers an amazing deal: for each story he learns, he is ready to give 100,000 yen in tuition, which Dombei would immediately return to pay off the debt.
So Toraji takes the stage name of Hayashiyatei Kotor and begins to learn rakugo, trying to combine training with the work of the yakuza. In the process of learning, he meets with the former “genius from rakugo”, the son of Dombei Ryuuji Yanaka, who maintains a European store in the Uraharajuku quarter.
Each episode of the series is based on one classic rakugo story. His first half is told by Dombey, introducing the audience to the theme of the story, and the second, more understandable, continues to Kotor.
