Biography
Born in 1970 in Bristol. In 1998 he graduated from the Department of Cinematography of the University of Bristol . During the training, he shot his first short films. The thesis, the film "The 10,000th Day" ( Eng. The 10000th Day ) of 1997, was included in the shortlist of the BAFTA film award , the next film, "The Day Grandfather Blinded" ( Eng. The 1998 Grand Day Went Blind ) of 1998, was shown on several film festivals. For both films, Smith himself wrote the scripts. In addition, his 1997 screenplay for Matt Starling's “Larry Takes Care” is nominated for a prize from the Royal Television Society for Best Student Work [1] . Smith then worked as a producer and director for Barry Norman's Film Night on Sky Television , and co-wrote the script for several episodes of the popular EastEnders series.
Smith’s full-length debut was the horror film Creep, released in 2004 . The author of the script again was Smith himself, who came up with the idea of the film during one of the trips in the London Underground , when the lights were turned off for a while on the train. [2] Invitation to the main role of Franky Potente allowed to finance part of the film from Germany.
The second film, Isolation, released in 2006 , was a comedy thriller about an assassin attack on a group of office workers who had come to the woods for a corporate vacation. Smith co-created the script for the film with James Moran.
Smith's third film, the psychological thriller Triangle of 2009 , was conceived by him back in 2004. According to the director, he was attracted to such films as The Shining and The Runway , and he wanted to create a film with a similar atmosphere. He also reflected on the scene in which the hero sees a person on board the ship and thinks who it might be, but in the end it turns out that it is him. [3] In an interview, Smith also said that he was trying to create a film that would produce an effect similar to the film " Memento ", but would not use an unusual "discontinuous" structure, but would have a traditional linear sequence. One of the sources of inspiration was also the horror film " Deep in the Night ", which has a looped composition. [four]
In 2010, Smith's historical thriller Black Death, about the period of the plague epidemic in the 14th century, was released . The screenwriter was Dario Poloni. The script immediately interested Smith, since it was about his favorite historical era from the history of England.
Smith is currently producing a film based on the CHERUB series of children's spy novels. He also bears the idea of a thriller similar in atmosphere to the movie Shallow Grave . The director’s plans also include a film about werewolves with elements of the “ Tarantino ” movie. [5] [6]
