Geography
The city of Fajardo is located in the extreme northeast of the island, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, north of the city of Ceiba and east of Lucquillo . The total area of the municipality (with an adjacent water body, which is 71% of the entire territory - including the islands of Palomino, Iskos and Palominito) is 272.8 km². Fajardo is the administrative center of the urban region of Fajardo (the smallest in Puerto Rico). An ocean port linking different regions of Puerto Rico and this island with other islands and territories of the Caribbean. There is an airport.
Administratively, the municipality is divided into 18 districts (districts).
History
The city was founded in 1760 (according to other sources, in 1774) under the name Santiago de Fajardo. On August 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War , the American destroyer Puritan, under the command of Captain Frederick W. Rogers, approached Fajardo. The US Army invaded Puerto Rico from the landing party from this ship.
The University of Puerto Rico was first opened in Fajardo.
Economics
Fajardo has a number of industrial enterprises and companies - electrical, metalworking, pharmacological, biotechnological. Significant income to the municipality also comes from the tourism business.
Climate
The climate in the Fajardo region is humid, tropical. Around the city grow mangrove forests .
