General Information

The second draw of the St. Petersburg tournament was again not gathered by the weakest team: the list of seeded single championships was headed by Evgeny Kafelnikov (No. 7 in the world at that time), and the doubles were his alliance with Andrei Olkhovsky (the Russians were 8th and 14th at the time of the start of the prize) th racket of the world).

The title in singles, however, did not go to Kafelnikov, but to the Swede Magnus Gustafsson , seeded seventh: on the way to the finals he did not lose a set, and in the finals in two games he managed just with Eugene. Lars Burgsmüller , who reached the semifinals, became the strongest seedless participant in the competition; at the same time, the German began his journey on the St. Petersburg courts with the qualifying competition, where he lost in the final stage and only then was admitted to the main draw at the last moment, when it became clear that not all of the announced participants in the net could go to court. Compared to the previous year, the tournament has become much more international in composition: already in the second round, Kafelnikov remained the only representative of the host country.

In the doubles category, Eugene and Andrey did not allow themselves to misfire, over six sets overcoming the path from the start of the tournament to the title. In the final, the Russians outplayed another team of compatriots: the fourth seeded Swedes Niklas Kulti and Peter Nyborg . Last year's champions - Martin Damm and Anders Yarrid - did not defend their last year’s title, but Anders took part in the tournament (paired with another compatriot Jan Apell ) and lost already at the start. The strongest unseeded grid team: David Adams and Hendrick Ian Davids - reached the semifinals.
