Story

The action takes place in Vienna at the end of the 19th century. Love and temptation are metaphorically presented as an endless tragicomic round dance . Each of the characters enters into a romantic relationship with the previous one, then breaks up with him and falls in love with the next character. One after another, the spectators are heartbroken by the prostitute, soldier, servant, son of her mistress, married lady, her husband, a young inexperienced girl, poet, actress and aristocrat.

Cast

  • Simone Signoret - Leocadia, a prostitute
  • Serge Reggiani - Franz Soldier
  • Simone Simon - Marie, the maid
  • Danielle Jelen - Alfred
  • Daniel Darje - Emma Brightkopf
  • Fernand Grave - Carl Breitkopf, Emma's husband
  • Odette Zhuayo - Anna, grisette
  • Jean-Louis Barro - Robert Kulenkampf, poet
  • Isa Miranda - Charlotte, actress
  • Gerard Philip - Count
  • Anton Walbrook - from the author

Receptions

The Merry-Go-Round illustrates the fascination of Ophuls with continuous plans and the rotation of action in the rhythm of a waltz . The first, deliberately theatrical stage made a great impression on the young Kubrick [2] . Anton Walbrook acts as the ceremonial and narrator [3] . His persona and voice, together with the non-stop sounds of Strauss's waltz, help to link disparate episodes into an organic whole [4] . Costumes of the " beautiful era " for the film was created by Yuri Annenkov .

Rewards

Max Ofyuls' Carousel is one of the few non-English films to be nominated for an Oscar in more than one category. The film claimed for American awards in the sections "Best Screenplay" and "Best Work of a Production Designer." The Carousel also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film.
