Biography
In 1953 he graduated from the Faculty of History at Leiden University.
- 1952-1953 - in the apparatus of the embassy in Hungary,
- 1953-1956 - the second secretary of the embassy, then in the apparatus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands,
- 1956-1959 - Second Secretary of the Embassy in Norway,
- 1959-1963 - First Secretary of Mission to NATO,
- 1966-1970 - Consul in Rio de Janeiro,
- 1970-1974 - Minister Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of the United Nations in New York,
- 1975-1977 - Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva,
October-December 1977 - Director General for European Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
- 1977-1981 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. In this post, he regularly came into conflict with the Christian Democratic party’s coalition partners on nuclear security policies, Taiwan’s submarine supplies, and apartheid’s policies in South Africa.
- 1981-1986 - Ambassador to Belgium,
- 1986-1989 - Ambassador to Portugal.
Since 1989, retired.
