Biography
Father Benedict Hyun received a martyrdom for professing Christianity in 1801. After three years of marriage, Benedict lost her husband, who died of illness. Adult children Benedict Hyun left the family in search of work. Left alone, Benedict Hyun earned a living by sewing and led a contemplative spiritual life, devoting herself to charity. Benedict Hyun provided her home for Catholic missionaries.
During the persecution, she was arrested as the elder sister of Karl Hyun , who played an important role in the spread of Catholicism, helping Catholic missionaries. She was tortured to reveal her brother’s location. Benedict Hyun was imprisoned, where she soon became ill with cholera .
Benedict Hyun was executed on December 29, 1839 in Seoul along with Barbara Cho , Magdalena Khan , Peter Choi , Elizabeth Chon , Barbara Ko and Magdalena Lee .
Praise
Hyun Kyung Nyon Benedict was beatified on July 5, 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 103 Korean martyrs .
