History
The station was opened in 1847 as a station in the Cologne-Minden railway section. By the beginning of the XX century, the existing station was no longer able to cope with the increased passenger flow, in this regard, in 1904 a new station building was opened.
The modern station building was built in 1982 to 1983 . This building was "hostile" by local residents, and the debate about the new station does not stop to this day. Despite this, in 2005, in preparation for the 2006 World Cup, the station was radically modernized. The reconstruction cost amounted to 15 million euros . The official opening took place on June 8, 2006 . As part of the modernization, the following works were performed:
- reconstruction of platforms with the creation of conditions for the blind and disabled;
- the creation of an air conditioning system;
- reconstruction of the passenger tunnel;
- creation of a tourist center ("Reise Zentrum");
- arrangement of parking and taxi parking;
- the creation of a wide network of shops, cafes and restaurants;
- the opening of the Essen Gelsenkirchen HBF light rail station.
