Geography
The province of Duarte is located in the north-eastern part of the country. In the north of it are the provinces of Maria Trinidad Sanchez , Espaillat and Samana , in the south - Monte Plata and Sanchez Ramirez , in the west - Ermanas Mirabal and La Vega . The provincial capital is San Francisco de Macoris .
The area of the province is 1,605 km². Its population is 384,789 people (as of 2012). The population density is 239.74 people / km².
History
In 1896, the District of Pacifikador (Distrito Pacificador) was formed, transformed into a province according to the 1907 constitution. In 1925, it was renamed in honor of Pablo Duarte , the national hero and founder of the Dominican Republic.
