In 2001 he graduated from the Novosibirsk Military Institute
After graduation, he served in the North Caucasus. Member of the hostilities in South Ossetia in August 2008 . On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgian forces attacked the Republic of South Ossetia . At 09:30, two battalion tactical groups of the 135th and 693rd motorized infantry regiments crossed the bridge in the Gufta area, Ossetian militias advanced towards them from Tskhinval . The peacekeeping battalion of the 135th motorized rifle regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel K. A. Timerman, was blocked and fought.
At 11:00, Russian troops and Ossetian militias met at Zaksky Pass. The situation was taken under control by the commander of the 58th army, Lieutenant General A.N. Khrulev . He found out which exits to Tskhinval are safe and which are already cut by the enemy. Calling the commander of the reconnaissance company of the 135th motorized rifle regiment, Captain A. Yu. Uvatov, he set him the task of penetrating the city occupied by the enemy to obtain intelligence. Captain A. Yu. Uvatov with a company bypassed Georgian barriers and ended up on the territory of the regiment's peacekeeping battalion.
At 15:00 rocket artillery dealt the first blow to the enemy. The decision was made, it was necessary to enter the city as soon as possible and not allow the Georgians to organize defense, to provide the main forces from Russia, otherwise the assault would cost a lot of blood. At this time, the company of Captain A. Yu. Uvatov and the peacekeeping battalion fought, preventing the Georgians from sending reinforcements to the city. The first losses appeared - killed and wounded. There was no opportunity to transport the wounded to the hospital.
By the evening of August 8, Russian infantry made its way to the outskirts of Tskhinval . At night, Georgian commandos and infantry gathered on the southern outskirts of the city, but could not penetrate Tskhinval - there was a peacekeeping battalion on the way. The enemy’s “Grad” worked on peaceful objects and on the positions of the battalion. Captain A. Yu. Uvatov with his scouts went "hunting" for the Georgian gunners. Around 01:00 he overtakes the calculation of the enemy installation "Grad". Destroys the crew, disables the installation.
Georgian troops tried to seep into Tskhinval from the southern side, but the scouts of Captain A. Yu. Uvatov, having defeated the enemy’s Grad installation, capturing several Georgian soldiers, including a pilot shot down over Tskhinval, returned to the peacekeeping battalion. Toward them moved on foot and in cars a column of Georgian commandos. Skillfully managing the unit, Captain A. Yu. Uchvatov organized a fire ambush. At 09:00 a.m. on August 9, the western outskirts of Tskhinval was controlled by Russian troops. Captain A. Yu. Uvatov from the city gave the coordinates of the firing positions of the enemy. Russian artillery carried fire to the southern outskirts of the city. Thanks to the decisive actions of Captain A. Yu. Uvatov and accurate artillery fire, the enemy was destroyed.
By 3 p.m., Russian troops quickly advanced to the city center and took control of the western and northern parts of the city. The peacekeeping battalion in the south, where the main forces of the Georgians were concentrated, was barely holding the defenses. The Georgians lifted the siege of the peacekeeping battalion and pulled troops to the city center, trying to block the actions of the assault troops of the 135th motorized rifle regiment. At the same time, a company of captain A. Yu. Uvatov attacked the Georgians, preventing them from maneuvering.
By the decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated February 5, 2009, for the courage and heroism shown in the performance of military duty in the North Caucasus region, Captain Ukhvatov Alexei Yuryevich was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation with the award of a special distinction - the Gold Star medal (No. 939).
In September 2009, Major A. Yu. Uvatov was dismissed from military service at the end of the contract.
