The valley of the IGY is a lowering of the glacial surface in East Antarctica , located between 55 掳 and 80 掳 East longitude and extending from the Soviet plateau to Prydz Bay .
The length is about 1000 km, the width is almost 600 km. The central part is located 500-700 m below the adjacent glacial surface of the Soviet Plateau, which is more than 3000 m high. In the north, the middle part of the valley is occupied by the Lambert glacier .
The northern part of the valley was discovered by expeditions of the USA ( 1946 - 1947 ) and Australia ( 1956 - 1958 ). The southern half (from the summit to the Lambert glacier) was first examined from the air by the Soviet Antarctic expedition of 1957-1958 . The valley was named after the International Geophysical Year (IGY).
