The Russian national team finished the preliminary stage of the next Grand Prix drawing in 2nd place and reached the final stage of the tournament. The final round, as before, was played on the playoff system between four teams. In the semifinals, the Russian volleyball players beat Brazil, and in the final they lost to the Cubans, winning silver medals at the competitions.

The preliminary stage in group βBβ was finished by the Russian team in the first place, having defeated the main team of Cuba in the stubborn struggle of its main rival in recent years. Having beaten the teams of China and the USA in the first two rounds of the playoffs, Russian volleyball players in a dramatic confrontation lost to the same Cubans in the final final match. Having gained the upper hand in the first two sets, the Russians in the third missed the threads of the game and its further course was already completely under the control of the Cuban national team, which won the Olympic gold, and for the third time in a row.
