The Battle of Hemmingstedt ( February 17, 1500 ) is a battle in which the peasants of the Dietmarschen region defeated the superior forces of Danish King Jan Oldenburg and his brother Prince Friedrich Golstinsky near the village of Hemmingstedt . The battle confirmed the de facto independence of the peasant republic of Ditmarshen for the next 59 years and is now considered the most significant historical event in this region.
