Biography
Born on May 8, 1920 in the village of Trokovichi (now Chernyakhovsky district of the Zhytomyr region , Ukraine ). Member of the CPSU (b) since 1943. After graduating from junior high school, he worked as a salesman.
In the Red Army since 1941. At the front of the Great Patriotic War since 1942. He was the gunner of the battery mortar of the 309th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 109th Guards Rifle Division, which, as part of the 44th Army on the Southern Front, fought heavy battles with German invaders north of the city of Melitopol in September 1943.
September 26, 1943 in one of the battles, when the personnel of the battery died, Guard Sergeant M. I. Bakalov alone continued to fire from the mortar at the enemy while there were mines. The wounded Bakalov M.I., the Nazis captured, subjected to brutal torture. The brave mortar man did not give out military secrets to the enemies. As a result of an attack by regiment units, M. I. Bakalov was released.
For the courage and heroism shown in the battle, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 19, 1944, M. I. Bakalov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
The file of Heroes of the Soviet Union is listed as missing in May 1944. It is more likely that Mikhail Ilyich died of his wounds on October 15, 1943 in evacuation hospital No. 2343, which was located at that time in Stalin (now Donetsk ), and was buried in the city cemetery.
