Born in a family of engineers. Father is a laureate of the USSR State Prize (as part of a team of authors) for the development of identification systems for military aviation [10] .

In 1986 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS) . According to the Profile magazine, in his third year, Friedman organized an informal youth club, Strawberry Glade, where discos were held, artists and bards performed. Events were held in the evenings in the lobby of the student dormitory of MISiS in Belyaevo . Friedman personally handed the musicians fees of 20-30 rubles. According to the statements of Friedman's competitors, at that time he was also a farmer [11] .

After graduating from the institute in 1986-1998 , he worked as a design engineer at the Elektrostal plant ( Elektrostal, Moscow Region). At this time, Friedman began to engage in entrepreneurial activity.

In 1988, he organized the Courier cooperative, specializing in window cleaning. In 1989, he, together with M.V. Alfimov (from whose surname the name appeared), G. B. Khan and A. V. Kuzmichyov [12] created and headed the company “Alpha-Photo”, which was engaged in the sale of photographic materials, computers and copy equipment [10] .

In 1989, he founded the Soviet- Swiss joint venture Alfa-Eco, which was engaged in the export of oil and metallurgical products [12] , on the basis of which Alfa Group was subsequently created.

In 1991, he headed the Board of Directors of Alfa Bank. Part of his capital was invested in Belarusian projects - Alfa Bank, Life operator, Belmarket and BelEuroset retailers . [13]

Subsequently, he was a member of the board of directors of the Public Russian Television (ORT) association, as well as the board of directors of SIDANCO Oil Company and the Perekrestok Trading House.

In May 2016, he announced his intention to spend almost his entire fortune on charity. Friedman does not intend to attract his children to participate in the management of Alfa Group, hoping that they will independently achieve career success [14] .

Has Israeli and Russian citizenship [15] [16] .

In January 2018, he was included in the “ Kremlin list ” of the US Treasury [17] .

Social and Political Activities

In January 1996, he was one of the founders of the Russian Jewish Congress , becoming its vice president and head of the committee on culture [18] .

It provides significant support to Jewish initiatives in Russia and Europe . In particular, Friedman makes a great contribution to the activities of the European Jewish Fund , a non-governmental organization that promotes the development of European Jewry and the promotion of ideas of tolerance and mutual respect in Europe .

According to the results of 2018, Forbes magazine estimated Friedman’s fortune at $ 15 billion. He took 7th place in the list of richest businessmen in Russia. In 2018, the size of his capital decreased by $ 100 million [24] .

Corporate Conflict

On March 17, 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had a working meeting with Mikhail Fridman, which observers associated with the conflict between Alfa Group and Oleg Deripaska 's Basic Element holding [25] .
