Character Story

Captain Haddock first appeared in the 1941 album Crab with Golden Claws . At first, he is shown as a rather negative character who spills with elaborate curses and cannot live without whiskey . [1] During the passage through the desert, under the influence of a mirage, he takes Tintin for a bottle of champagne and tries to “uncork” it, tearing his head off.

In later albums, Haddock is shown living a bachelor life with the butler Nestor on the Moulensard country estate. With each new album, the captain took an increasingly prominent place on the agenda, pushing fox terrier Milu into the background as Tintin's best friend. In the last albums of Erzhe, the good-natured captain was allotted no less place than the reporter himself. The age of the hero is not exactly known.

The captain is a descendant of the Chevalier de Adoc, commander of the royal fleet in the 17th century, to whom Louis XIV bestowed the estate of Moulinsard . On the other hand, the name of Haddock was carried by several English naval officers of the XVII-XVIII centuries, including Admiral Nicholas Haddock ( 1686 - 1746 ) [2] .

Tintinologists explain Erzhe's commitment to this character by the fact that he provided him with more opportunities for self-expression than Tintin himself. The remarks full of sarcasm and amusing gestures made the captain an ideal partner for the always collected and too “right” Tintin.

His vocabulary

A distinctive feature of the captain is the use of exotic words like “ troglodyte !”, “ Bashibuzuki ”, “ Mamelukes ” and “ ectoplasm !” As curses. The Captain Haddock’s Dictionary of Warfare [3] contains 192 abusive expressions uttered by him, many of which Erzhe gleaned while looking at rare dictionaries. Among Haddock's favorite expressions:

  • “Thousand millions thousand billions thousand devils!” (Fr. “Mille millions de mille milliards de mille sabords!”),
  • “Thunder and lightning!” (French: “Tonnerre de Brest!”).

A special place in Haddock's vocabulary is occupied by the terms of rhetoric, for example, “ anacoluf ” and “ katahreza ” [4] .

Interesting Facts

  • The name of the captain - Archibald - becomes known only in the last completed Erzhe album - “ Tintin and Picard ”.
  • The captain does not have such a complicated surname, however, singer Bianca Castafiore does not manage to remember her. In the album “ Jewels of Castafiore ” alone , she alternately calls captain Kappok, Koddak, Mastok, Kozak, Kolbak, Karbok, Karnak, Hablok, Maggok, Medok and Kapshtok [5] .
  • In the computer animated film " The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, " shot by Steven Spielberg in 2011 , Haddock was voiced by actor Andy Serkis .
  • According to Emil Brami, author of the monograph on Louis Ferdinan Celine , part of the captain’s curses was borrowed from the author’s vocabulary of “ Travel to the End of the Night ” [6] .
