History

In 1746 a branch of the bank was opened on the island of Java by the Netherlands United East India Company , the first banking institution in the archipelago.

On January 24, 1828, the Bank of Java was founded, which received the right to issue banknotes for 10 years. Subsequently, this period was extended several times.

Before the occupation of Indonesia by Japanese troops, the gold reserves of the Bank of Java were exported to Australia and South Africa. Having occupied Java in February – March 1942, the Japanese soon took measures to control the banking system. In April 1942, all banking operations were banned, then all Dutch, British and Chinese banks were liquidated. Their place was taken by the branches of Yokohama Spice Bank, Bank of Taiwan and Mitsui Bank.

The resumption of the activities of the Bank of Java after the end of the Japanese occupation was possible only in areas occupied by the troops of the Netherlands. In the territories occupied by the troops of the Republic of Indonesia, the Bank of Indonesia, established in 1946 and soon renamed the State Bank of Indonesia, was to perform emission functions. Despite the extremely difficult conditions, already on October 30, 1946, their own banknotes were issued.

In accordance with the decisions of the peace conference in The Hague in 1949, the Bank of Java received the status of the issuing bank of the United States of Indonesia. After liquidation in 1950 of the United States and the formation of the unitary Republic of Indonesia, the bank continued to perform its functions. On July 1, 1953, the Bank of Java was nationalized and renamed the Bank of Indonesia. In August 1965, the bank was renamed the State Bank of Indonesia. In January 1969, the bank was renamed again the Bank of Indonesia [1] .
