Biography

Maria Cristina von Reibnitz was born on January 15, 1945 in Karlovy Vary , near the estate of the family of her grandmother Princess Hedwig Windisch Gretz . Maria Cristina is the only daughter of Baron Gunther von Reibniz and Countess Maria Anna von Sapari. Her mother's father was Friedrich Sapari , an Austro-Hungarian diplomat, ambassador to St. Petersburg .

Through her mother, the Princess of Kent is a descendant of the King of France, Henry II [1] , Queen Catherine de Medici [2] , Diana de Poitiers and the famous artist Peter Paul Rubens [3] .

Marriage

Her first husband was an English banker, Thomas Trowbridge. They met in Germany, got married on September 14, 1971 in London . But the marriage was unfortunate, and in 1977 the Roman Catholic Church officially annulled it.

A month after the divorce, on June 30, 1978, she married Prince Michael of Kent, son of Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902–1942) and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906–1968). Prince Michael is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II . After marriage, Mary accepted the title Her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent , the female equivalent for the title of husband, since she was not born a princess.

Prince Michael, after marriage, lost the right to inherit the British throne, since Mary Christina was Catholic. Nevertheless, their children retain their inheritance rights, as they are Protestant by religion.

The Prince and Princess of Kent have two children:

  • Lord Frederick Windsor , born April 6, 1979;
  • Lady Gabriella Windsor , born April 23, 1981.
