Coulter, John Merle

John Merle Coulter was born in Ningbo on November 20, 1851. ^{[2] [3]}

In 1870, he received a bachelor's degree from Hanover College ^[2] . In 1874, Coulter was appointed professor of natural sciences in Hanover ^[2] .

In 1882, he received his Ph.D. from Indiana University at Bloomington , and in 1891 he was appointed President of Indiana University at Bloomington. ^[2]

In 1893, John Merle Coulter was appointed President of Lake Forest College , Illinois. ^[2] In 1896, he was appointed head of the Department of Botany at the University of Chicago ^[2] .

In 1925, Coulter moved to Yonkers, New York to help organize the new Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research , in which he was dean and chief adviser. ^[2]

Coulter made a significant contribution to botany by describing many species of seed plants ^[6] .

John Merle Coulter died in the city of Yonkers ^[2] December 23, 1928 ^[3] .
