Content
Biography
John Merle Coulter was born in Ningbo on November 20, 1851. [2] [3]
In 1870, he received a bachelor's degree from Hanover College [2] . In 1874, Coulter was appointed professor of natural sciences in Hanover [2] .
In 1882, he received his Ph.D. from Indiana University at Bloomington , and in 1891 he was appointed President of Indiana University at Bloomington. [2]
In 1893, John Merle Coulter was appointed President of Lake Forest College , Illinois. [2] In 1896, he was appointed head of the Department of Botany at the University of Chicago [2] .
In 1925, Coulter moved to Yonkers, New York to help organize the new Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research , in which he was dean and chief adviser. [2]
Coulter made a significant contribution to botany by describing many species of seed plants [6] .
John Merle Coulter died in the city of Yonkers [2] December 23, 1928 [3] .
