Geography
The lake is located in the Gross Morne National Park between the spurs of the Long Range mountain range, which is the northern part of the Appalachian mountain system. The total area of the lake is 22.8 km², height above sea level - 30 meters. The water volume is 1.65 km³. The catchment area is 171 km².
The lake was originally a fjord , which turned into a lake after the last ice age in the rezulnate postglacial landfall . Although more than 60% of the total lake volume is below sea level, its water is completely fresh.
Western Brook Pond is one of the most spectacular lakes in Canada’s national parks . The wider western tip of the zera is surrounded by relatively flat and low shores. In the narrower eastern part of the lake are surrounded by steep cliffs with a height of about 600 meters [1] . The lake’s drainage basin is only 7.4 times the size of the lake itself. The lake receives food from more than 20 streams. Most of these streams form waterfalls or cascades of waterfalls, steeply dropping down from the mountain plateaus. The 350-meter high Pissing Mare Falls is one of the largest in eastern North America .
Before the formation of the Gros-Morne National Park in 1972, very few people knew about the lake, except for the local residents. Now the lake is becoming increasingly popular among tourists visiting the park [2] .
Climate
The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is −9.1 ° С, the average temperature of the warmest month (July) is 16.4 ° С, the average annual temperature is 4.2 ° С. The maximum amount of precipitation falls in September (167 mm), the minimum - in March (26 mm), the average annual rainfall is 1104 mm. Ice weather from February to March. The sharp drop in height of the shores surrounding the lake contributes to the sudden turbulence of the air and the strong gusty winds that make the lake very risky for boating [3] .
