Works
His most famous work is the Propylaea , the monumental entrance gate of the Athenian Acropolis , which was built from 437 BC. er until 432 BC. er In the two exterior porticoes of Propile, the Doric style of the Parthenon columns was copied, both buildings were supposed to be visual unity. Portico connects the internal colonnade in the Ionic style . The northern wing of Propile occupied Pinakothek .
The initial design of this structure, as was proved by Dernfeld , was supposed to be much more ambitious, but was not executed for reasons not known with precision. It is assumed that the party hosted by Pericles , hiding behind religious considerations, played the role, because the Propylaeus should have occupied a part of the plot of land dedicated to Artemis Bravronia and destroyed part of the sacred Pelasgian wall.
Propylaea remained unfinished due to the Peloponnesian War that broke out in 431: the sums assigned for their construction were used for military expenses.
Mnesicles also worked on the construction of the Erechtheion from 421 BC. er until 405 BC. er
