Karl Ludwig Friedrich Becker was born on December 18, 1820 in the city of Berlin.

From 1837 to 1840 he studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts , and then continued his studies at the Berlin studio of August Kloeber ( German: August von Kloeber ), after which he moved to the city of Munich , where he perfected his mastery under the supervision of Heinrich Maria von Hess ( German Heinrich Maria von Hess ).

He was later elected a member of the board of the Berlin Academy of Arts, and then honorary president of the academy.

On his canvases, the artist depicted mainly scenes from Venetian life in the 16th and 17th centuries . At the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX centuries, the pages of the " Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron " gave the following assessment of his work:

B.'s paintings generally do not differ in depth of idea and drama, but are remarkable for the strength and brilliance of colors, the richness of writing and the accurate reproduction of the whole life of Venice in its blooming season [1] .

Among his works the most famous are: “Sebastiano del Piombo visiting Titian” (1861), “Venetian Masquerade” (1863), “Doge at a meeting of the Council of Ten” (1864), “Charles V visits Fugger” (1866; was exhibited at the Berlin National Gallery), "Othello telling Desdemona and Brabancio about his adventures" (Breslav Museum), "A. Dürer in Venice ”(1872),“ Scene from Goetz von Berlichingen ”(Cologne Museum),“ Doge's Ball during the Carnival ”(1884; at the Berlin National Gallery). In the Kushelev Gallery at the Museum of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, a “ very characteristic painting ” by Becker “Madame and Page” was exhibited [1] .

Karl Ludwig Friedrich Becker died on December 20, 1900 in his hometown, just over a day after his 80th birthday.
