Construction
It was built in Newport News (VA) and went into operation on August 16, 1943 .
Design
Length 265 meters, weight 42 thousand tons. It has 1600 hatches and doors on board, the total length of electric cables is 32 thousand km.
Service
Intrepid served on the U.S. Navy for 31 years. It has a rich military history. Since 1943, the aircraft carrier took part in the battles in the Pacific Ocean . In a battle near Truk Island on February 17-18, 1944, he was attacked by a torpedo bomber of the Nakajima B5N type and damaged by one torpedo, after which he was forced to leave for San Francisco for repairs. He returned to duty in June 1944.
Later, the aircraft carrier suffered five attacks of the kamikaze (on October 29, 1944, getting into the gun mount did little damage, after the blow on November 22, he had to go for repair [1] ).
He took part in the blockade of Cuba during the Caribbean crisis , was used for its intended purpose during the Korean and Vietnamese wars .
The aircraft carrier was used by NASA in the space missions Mercury and Gemini , picking up the descent capsules in the ocean.
Museum Ship
In 1974, the ship was decommissioned, it was planned to disassemble it, but at the initiative of the millionaire Zachary Fisher, it was turned into a museum ship .
The ship is moored to 86th pier in New York and since 1982 is a naval and aerospace museum, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists a year. If necessary, the ship is able to become a center for emergency services. In 1986, Intrepid was recognized as a US landmark.
Since 2006, the ship was undergoing reconstruction in dry docks in Beyonne ( New Jersey ), and on November 8, 2008, the ship-museum was again opened to visitors.
In June 2012, the Enterprise shuttle was installed on the floating aviation museum equipped with the Intrepid aircraft carrier [2] .
