Description

The two-colored green kingfisher reaches a length of 24 cm and weighs 46-60 g. The color of the upper body is shiny dark green, the lower part of the body is red-brown. On the wings, especially in females, there are subtle white strokes. Only the female has a wide white-green stripe on her chest.

Distribution

The distribution area extends from southeastern Nicaragua , Costa Rica and Panama to the Gulf of Guayaquil and east of the Andes through northern South America to the Atlantic coast of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . The bicolor kingfisher prefers dense forests along river flows, wetlands and mangroves.

Nutrition

The bird hunts, rushing to prey in the water from an ambush on a tree branch. The food consists of fish up to 12 cm long, as well as shrimp.

Reproduction

Little is known about the biology of reproduction. In clutch 3-5 eggs.
