Biography
Received a fairly minor education, remaining mostly self-taught. In 1638, he began teaching at an elementary school in Dudley , where he was ordained a priest. At first he was a preacher in Kidderminster . Driven from the beginning of the civil war at the beginning of the civil war , in 1642, he joined the parliamentary army as a field priest of one independent regiment. In 1649 he returned to his former community; but when (in 1662) a famous act of uniformity appeared, Baxter, forced to leave his post, retired to Acton (now in London). The indulgence of 1672 (Declaration of indulgence) gave him again the opportunity to speak publicly as a preacher. He went to London , but on the basis of certain passages from his “Paraphrase of the New Testament” was brought to justice and sentenced to imprisonment and a fine. Only with the accession to the throne of Wilhelm III (1689), the established tolerance for all Protestant denominations gave Baxter the desired peace, which he enjoyed for a short time to death.
Its significance consists in the fact that thanks to him, the English theology was carried out in a more gentle, in the spirit of M. Amiro , Calvinism, called Baxterianism and preaching, however, the purpose of a certain number of mortals to salvation, but not allowing forward predetermined rejection for those seeking salvation. The ideal of a preacher he created in his work “The Evangelical Priest” he realized, it seems, in his activity. Wed in the book of "Die Revolutionskirchen Englands" (Berlin, 1868) and in the biography of Baxter, written by .
The works of Baxter were published by in London (1830), then in 1847 in 4 volumes, selected works in German by O. Gerlach (3 ed. Klaus, Karlsruhe, 1882). His autobiography was published by M. Silvestre under the title: "Reliquiae Baxterianae" (London, 1696; 2 ed., 1713). The works of Baxter were translated into Russian many times: “On the eternal peace of the righteous” (St. Petersburg, 1839–40, 1840–49 and 1881; Moscow, 1841), “Ascent to the unconverted” (St. Petersburg, 1835), “Reformed Pastor” (Moscow: Narnia Center, 2010).
Interest in the works of Baxter intensified in the XX century due to the fact that his teaching was one of the subjects of analysis by Max Weber in his work "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism " (1905).
