The length of the ridge is about 1000 km. The ridge is formed by a chain of young Neogene — Quaternary volcanic cones up to 2500–3000 m high. 10 of them are active volcanoes: Iliamna , Katmay , Pavlova , Veniaminova , Shishaldina and others. The highest point is Mount Redout (3108 m).
On the tops of volcanoes are eternal snow and glaciers . The slopes are covered with subarctic meadows and mountain tundra .
The ridge was opened, put on the map and explored by Russian pioneers in the XVII century .
