Biography

Born on August 11 (24), 1914 in a peasant family in the village of Maslyanino, Barnaul district of Tomsk province [2] (now a township of the Novosibirsk region type ). Russian He graduated from high school, and in 1937 - Tomsk Agricultural College [3] (land management department). He worked as a land surveyor in the city of Novosibirsk .

In the Red Army since 1937. In 1941 he graduated from the Leningrad Military Infantry School. Member of the Great Patriotic War since 1941. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1943.

The commander of the rifle battalion of the 136th Guards Rifle Regiment (42nd Guards Rifle Division, 40th Army, Voronezh Front) of the Guard Captain Pyotr Bazhin was especially distinguished when crossing the Dnieper River south of the capital of Ukraine - Kiev . His unit, which was a combined infantry battalion of one hundred and ninety people, created from the remnants of the regiment, on the night of September 25-26, 1943, began forcing the Dnieper on eighteen boats and three half-belts. The enemy discovered the crossing of the Soviet troops and destroyed all 45-millimeter guns and up to eighty personnel on the water with artillery fire.

For two days, the battalion of the captain Bazhin’s guard fought for the Yapcha forest, and only on September 28, 1943, having captured it, then went to the village, which the Nazis turned into a strong point. Dividing the soldiers into three detachments, P. Ya. Bazhin attacked the enemy from three sides. The stronghold was captured, but forty-two men and one mortar remained in the battalion. The chief of staff of the battalion, the commander of the mortar company and the deputy commander of the battalion for political affairs were killed in the battle.

During the attack on the village of Panikarcha, the remnants of the battalion were surrounded, which they could not get out of. When trying to break through with his remaining personnel of eighteen people, the wounded battalion commander Pyotr Bazhin was captured.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 29, 1943, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism of the guard shown to this, Captain Bazhin Pyotr Yakovlevich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Returning from captivity, P. Ya. Bazhin learned that he was awarded the highest degree of distinction. A few years after the war, he was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal (No. 11153).

In 1945-1948, Captain Bazhin P. Ya. Served in the troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR . Then he worked as a land surveyor, and since 1958, he was the head of the land department and the head of the design bureau of the Brest branch of the Belgiproekt Institute.

He lived in the city of Baranavichy, Brest region of Belarus . He died on April 16, 1978.
