Biography
He attended the Napoleonic Lyceum, and since 1811 the Polytechnic School, which he left in 1813 to enter the Artillery School in Metz. He was released from school by an artillery officer, but in 1814. forever dropped out of military service and soon became a professor of mathematics at Fontenay-le-Comte, then a professor of physics in Poitiers and finally at the Paris College of St. Louis. In 1840 he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences; At one time he also studied at the Astronomical Bureau of Geographical Longitudes.
He died in Paris on October 21, 1872.
He did a lot to improve the mineralogical and meteorological science and became famous for his work in the field of astronomy, the doctrine of magnetism and the theory of heat. The results of his research and observations are scattered in various time-based publications and scientific collections. Most of his work is in Compte rendu Acad. sciences. B.'s articles published in the Revue de deux Mondes and Journal des Débats were compiled in Études et lectures sur les sciences d'observation (8 vols., Paris, 1855–68). Mention should also be made of his "Traité élémentaire de la géometrie descriptive" (Paris, 1851).
