Group History

The first album of the same name, the group released in 2002, the second, "Darkness at Noon" in 2004, which was recorded in the Czech Republic, England and the USA. It was during the recording of the second album that Jeremy Barnes met and met Heather Trost. In 2005, Barnes and Trost, along with Zach Condon of the Beirut band, recorded the music album Gulag Orkestar . The band’s third disc, “The Way the Wind Blows,” was released in 2006 and was partially recorded in the small Romanian village of Iasi , with the support of the Romanian band Windfare Ciocărlia , who plays brass instruments. In 2007, the group A Hawk and a Hacksaw was awarded a grant by one of the branches of the British Art Council, which allowed them to tour England together with the Hungarian folklore ensemble The Hun Hangár Ensemble . After the tour, Barnes and Trost left for Hungary and stayed in Budapest for 2 years. The album "Délivrance" was released in the capital of Hungary in 2009 along with some of the best performers of folk Hungarian music. The fifth album, Cervantine, was recorded in February 2011. The name of the group is translated as "Hawk and a hacksaw" and has an incomprehensible origin. Perhaps it refers to the book of Miguel de Cervantes “ Don Quixote ”, written in 1604. Or comes from William Shakespeare's Hamlet , probably written in 1600; "I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw . " In an English translation, Don Quixote states: "... therefore, let every man lay his hand upon his heart and not pretend to mistake an hawk for a handsaw; for, we are all as God made us, and many of us much worse . " [2]
