Levi, Ludwig

Ludwig Levi ( German: Ludwig Lévy ; Fr. Louis Lévy ; born April 18, 1859 , Landau - November 30, 1907 , Karlsruhe ) - German architect and teacher of the University of Karlsruhe .

Biography

Ludwig Levy was born into a Jewish family. Was the sixth child. Father - Jonah Levy was engaged in trade in textiles, mother - Barbara Levi (ur. Machol). After graduating from school in Landau, he studied architecture at the Karlsruhe University of Technology . In 1882 he opened his own architectural office in Kaiserslautern . In recognition of his achievements, he was appointed architect of the Ministry of the Interior of the State of Baden . He presumed since 1886 at the Construction School and the Karlsruhe University of Technology. In 1890 he married Flora Levinger, in marriage with whom he had two children, Babette Marie (p.1891) and Erwin Walter (b. 1896). In November 1938, almost all of its synagogues were burned. His widow, Flora in 1940, was interned from Karlsruhe to Gurs concentration camp , from there in the summer of 1942 she was deported to Terezin camp . She died April 23, 1943 at the age of 74 years. Their two children were already dead at that time and left no descendants. The house of Ludwig Levy in Karlsruhe was confiscated during World War II .

  • Levi-torus, the so-called "Levi Gate" of wrought iron. Located in the North-West corner of the castle garden in Kirchheimbolanden . The castle was owned by Frederick Brunk. The gate, designed by architect Ludwig Levy, was forged in 1889 in Frankfurt in the workshop of blacksmith art, possibly Franz Brechenmacher. This is a skillful structure with flowers, fruits and garlands of vines decorated with cords. It borders on two pillars of sandstone topped with vases. The gate was restored in 2009 and is equipped with a protective coating.
