History

Prayer for laying a bridge

The bridge was built by Russian workers and technicians under the guidance of engineer Yevgeny Karlovich Knorre , designed by professor of the Imperial Moscow Technical School Lavr Proskuryakov [1] . Construction began in 1895 . August 30, 1896 the laying of the bridge took place. The prayer during the laying was attended by: Yenisei Governor P.M. Prein, E.K. Knorre , the railway authorities and the masses of city residents. The prayer service was performed by Bishop Akisiy of Yenisei and Krasnoyarsk. A stone with a cross was laid in the foundation of the lower part of the coastal abutment, a manuscript was laid on this stone, on which the laying time, the names of the builders and honored guests were indicated. Gold and silver coins were poured onto the stone during the service, and only then the first stone was covered with another on cement mortar.

The Yenisei bridge became the longest bridge (907 meters) and the largest farm span in Russia (144.5 meters) among all similar structures built by that time in the country [2] , lightweight structures of the farms themselves, freezing of mines under caissons, use timber for caissons, pressure reduction in them and the highest construction cost - 3 million rubles [2] .

The construction was completed on March 28, 1899 . March 27, tests of the bridge took place. Initially, two trains were driven into it, each of four steam locomotives and six wagons loaded with rails . Then, two steam locomotives with 23 platforms with rails passed along the bridge at a speed of 70 km / h.

In 1900, at the World Exhibition in Paris , a model of the Krasnoyarsk bridge was presented, which was awarded the Grand Prix and a gold medal - “For architectural excellence and excellent technical performance” [3] . The special jury was led by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel . A common misconception is the idea that the Krasnoyarsk bridge shared the Grand Prix with the Eiffel Tower. However, the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 and received a gold medal this year, and the Krasnoyarsk bridge - after 11 years.

The bridge is also mentioned in the Atlas of Wonders of the World. Outstanding Architectural Buildings and Monuments of All Times and Peoples ”, published in 1991 in the USA, in the“ Russia ”section, along with the Kremlin and Petrodvorets .

In the 1930s , when a second path was laid to increase the capacity of the Trans-Siberian Railway , another constructively similar one was built next to this bridge. In the 1990s, construction of the third bridge began, next to the existing ones. It was assumed that after putting it into operation, the first, pre-revolutionary, can be dismantled.

Despite the protests of the defenders of historical and cultural monuments, in 2002 the dismantling of the bridge began.

It was handed over for scrap on August 7, 2007 [4] .
