Pines, Shlomo

Shlomo Pines ( Hebrew שלמה פינס , August 5, 1908 - January 9, 1990 ) is a French and Israeli scholar of Jewish and Islamic philosophy . Gained fame for the English translation of Maimonides ' Guide to the Oscillating .

Biography

Born in Paris . He spent his childhood in Paris, Riga , Arkhangelsk , London and Berlin . His father, Meyer Yakovlevich Pines, was a literary critic and entrepreneur who wrote a dissertation ( Sorbonne ) on the history of Yiddish literature .

Between 1926 and 1934 studied philosophy , Semitic languages and linguistics at the University of Heidelberg , the University of Geneva and the Humboldt University of Berlin . His friends included Arabian Paul Kraus and Leo Strauss . The latter became the author of an introductory article to the classic translation of the Hesitant Guidebook by Pines.

In the years 1937-1939. studied the history of science in Islamic countries at the Paris Institute of the History of Science.

In 1940, he and his family sailed to Palestine on the last ship sailing from Marseille , shortly after which the Nazi occupation of France began (during which 25% of the Jews were expelled and killed).

From the early years of the State of Israel, Pines worked as a professor at the Department of Jewish Philosophy and at the Department of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - from 1952 until his death in 1990.

Knowledge of modern and ancient languages ​​( Arabic , Syriac , Hebrew , Farsi , Sanskrit , Turkish , Coptic and others) provided a wide horizon for his research.
