Geographical position
Vergavil is located 55 km southeast of Metz . Neighboring communes: Geblen and Burgaltrof in the north, Bidetrof in the east, Sommange in the southeast, Lendre-Ot in the south, Dieuze and Val de Brid in the southwest, Gebestrof in the west.
History
- In 966, a Benedictine abbey was founded here, since 1190 it was under the protectorate of the bishopric of Metz, and since the XVI century - the duchy of Lorraine.
- The commune was destroyed during the Thirty Years War of 1618–1648, then restored.
- The seat of the former archbishop.

According to the 2008 census, 564 people lived in the commune.
