Work organization, subject matter of programs

Sami Radio has its correspondents in the settlements of Inari , Utsjoki and Kaaresuvanto .

Broadcasting is mostly in North Sami , but also in two other Sami languages spoken in Finland — Inari Sami and Koltta Sami . Among radio journalists, we can highlight Anni-Cristina Juuso , best known for her roles in the Russian film “The Cuckoo ” (2002) and the Norwegian “ Uprising in Kautokeino ” (2008).

Subjects of the program are news (relating primarily to the life of the Saami of Finland ), Saami culture , environmental issues; music is also transmitted, including the Sami folk .

Events of 2011

In March 2011, the Sámi Parliament of Finland demanded that Yle Broadcasting Company hand over its Sámi service, including the Sámi radio and Oasat television news reports. The administrative board of the Yle TV and Radio Company, according to the Sami Parliament, does not have adequate competence in Sami issues, and therefore is not able to ensure the normal development of Sami Radio Finland [1] .

In response, the Chairman of the Public Word Council, Risto Uimonen stated that this requirement is contrary to the basic principles of democracy, because, in his opinion, the Sami radio as a media outlet, being subordinate to a political body, will not be able to fully carry out its democratic functions, including public control over state structures [2] .
